Lamu

Overview

Lamu is a small town on Lamu Island and is Kenya’s oldest town that has remained populated for the last 700 years or more. This is unique as most other Swahili settlements as old as this have been left abandoned. Lamu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and consists of beautifully preserved buildings with architecture influenced by Swahili, Arabic, Indian and European cultures. The city is also unique as visitors are forced to walk or use alternative transportation such as donkeys as vehicles are not permitted down the narrow streets.

With its centuries-old Swahili settlements, a couple of gorgeous beaches, and culture and architecture distinctive from what you encounter elsewhere along the Kenyan coast, Lamu is beguiling. Whether you're looking to lose yourself in the fragrant labyrinth of tiny streets in Lamu Town and spend hours admiring carved Omani and Swahili doorways, or whether you're looking for a peaceful beachfront stay replete with yoga, art, and fusion food in Shela village, Lamu has something to satisfy most travelers.

Best Time To Visit Lamu Island

Like the rest of the Kenyan coast, Lamu Island has a tropical climate with high temperatures and plenty of humidity all year round. The hottest and most humid time of year is the January to March dry season. The July to October dry season is slightly cooler and is a more pleasant time of year to travel for those that don’t do well in intense heat. The long rains last from April to early June and are best avoided. The short rains (from November to December) can be an excellent time to travel because precipitation usually takes the form of short, sharp thunderstorms with bright sunshine in between. Rates for tours and accommodation are cheaper at this time of year, and there are fewer tourists.
