Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular national park, located in the Western Rift Valley. Queen Elizabeth National Park was established in 1952, firstly named as “Kazinga National Park”. The name continued to evolve over the years until it eventually became known as Queen Elizabeth National Park following a visit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1954. The park stretches 1,978 sq. km and consists of a diverse collection of ecosystems and unique geography.
The park is unique in its varied landscapes as it consists of grassland, forested area and wetlands and while also hosting the unique features of volcanic formations including craters and cones which can be seen within the park. Many different species of animal exist within the park including elephants, Hons, leopards, hippopotami, chimpanzee and more. Queen Elizabeth National Park is also a bird-watchers delight as the park inhabits over 500 unique bird species.
As well as its outstanding wildlife attractions, Queen Elizabeth National Park has a fascinating cultural history.
There are too many things to explore in Africa but what are the special things make Queen Elizabeth National Park unique? Let’s find out….
Activities vary and include game drives and nature walks, as well as boat trips down the Kazinga Channel for a unique vantage point on the savannah wildlife. You can also embark on chimpanzee tracking, as well as cultural tours and birding trips. Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a complete change from the heavily forested National Park of Bwindi where most people who head to Uganda will track the endangered mountain gorillas.
With so much to offer both in terms of scenic diversity and the variety of available activities, a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park should be savoured by allowing adequate time to explore. Booking a stay at one of several luxury lodges will guarantee access to an experienced and knowledgeable guide to tie together the richness of the biodiversity and history of the region, and, naturally, to make the most of the wildlife viewing opportunities.
