The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is an area with a range of unique ecosystems that stretches beyond the Ngorongoro Crater. The area is roughly 8,300 sq. km and contains a concentration of wildlife and varying habitats of grass plains, marshlands, and lush forest landscapes. The Ngorongoro Conservation area is protected land and was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The area consists of the crater highlands, comprised of elevated and collapsed volcanos and their remains.
The Ngorongoro Crater itself is of immense size and measures roughly 20km wide, making it one of the largest calderas in the world. The crater was formed roughly two to three million years ago as a result of an erupted volcano that had collapsed inward.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to the Olduvai Gorge, the location where the remains of the earliest human life were discovered, making it one of the most significant locations in terms of evolution and its encompassing theories. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to roughly 30,000 animals, making it a prime game viewing destination with its large populations of lion, hyena, leopard, wildebeest, buffalo, black rhino, and more.

the world's largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera
There are too many things to explore in Africa but what are the special things makes Ngorongoro Conservation Area unique? Let’s find out….
The Best Time To Visit Ngorongoro Conservation Area is from June to February if you are coming for the Great Migration. Wildlife lives at the crater year-round, which means you can visit at any time of year and still get great game viewing.
March and April see the worst of the rains, so the crater is less busy during these months. One benefit of visiting during the wet season is that the landscapes are beautiful, but wildlife viewing is not as good. The peak season is July to September, and this corresponds with the best wildlife viewing.
If you are keener on seeing the predators in action, go in January or February when there is a hiatus in the annual rains and the wildebeest calve.
